“Doug Jackson is a distinguished trumpeter and independent recording artist known for his unique fusion of funk and jazz, aptly named “FUAZZ.” Born and raised in Denver, Colorado, Doug’s passion for music has been evident since his early years. His visionary talent was recognized when he received the Denver East High School Outstanding Music Award in 1973, setting the stage for a lifelong journey of musical exploration.
After high school, Doug performed and recorded with renowned musicians such as Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee Solomon Burke and jazz pianist Joe Bonner, who was a mentor and friend. Doug’s relentless pursuit of musical excellence led him to prestigious institutions like Knoxville College and Berklee College of Music, where he honed his craft alongside some of the world’s brightest talents. He later earned a Master’s degree in Interdisciplinary Studies from the University of Southern Utah, further enhancing his artistic perspective.
In 1994, Doug toured the Middle East, performing for U.S. troops with the USO and Department of Defense. Upon returning to the United States, he formed “The Untouched,” a five-piece jazz show band that showcased his ability to captivate audiences with his innovative sound.
Doug’s first full-length album, First Breath, released in 1999, was a triumph that displayed his diverse musical range. Produced and arranged by his long-time friend Joe Bonner, First Breath became a testament to Doug’s ability to blend genres, moods, and emotions into one cohesive sound. His sophomore release, Stowaway (on the Mothership), further solidified his status as a pioneering artist. The album, a celebration of funk and jazz, featured tributes to musical icons such as James Brown, George Clinton, and Miles Davis.
Doug’s music has been featured on major radio stations like KZKO and has received critical acclaim, including a “highly recommended” review from Howard Dukes of SoulTracks for Stowaway. His performances at events like the Five Points Jazz Festival, CU Denver showcases, and solo performances at renowned venues such as Jazz@Jack’s have made him a staple of the Denver music scene.
Beyond the stage, Doug’s contributions to the music community extend to teaching and mentoring the next generation of musicians. In 2018, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Entertainment from the University of Colorado Denver, further cementing his legacy as both an artist and educator.
Doug continues to perform, record, and compose, constantly pushing the boundaries of jazz and funk. His cinematic work, including the short film Colfax Theme, showcases his ability to expand his musical vision into new mediums.
